THE SCIENCE OF YAGYA (FIRE CEREMONY)
Rambhai Patel

In Indian culture Yagya is considered to be the symbol of good deeds. Yagya means giving up something or sacrificing something. Through the medium of the Yagya, nutritious substances and health giving herbs are offered to the fire. This in turn benefits the whole world through the medium of air in the atmosphere.

These substances which are offered in the Yagya enter the breath of all living creatures as well as plants and have been found to improve their health. Scientific investigations have also proved that the food that is offered in the Yagya purifies and improves the health of human beings, the material world, nature and the environment. That is why a well-known thinker like Chanakya has said while talking about the Yagya, “The act of performing a Yagya is a fully complete charity. Donation of food, donation of clothes, and donating education can definitely be called charity. But Yagya is a complete charity because through it, right from the material world to nature - all living creatures are benefited.

Just as Allopathy, Homeopathy and Ayurveda are methods of treatment for sicknesses, ‘Yagnopathy’ has also been proved to be a type of technique or cure. Herbs are put in the fire and various diseases are cured through it. Through the Yagya, strong and powerful elements spread in the atmosphere and through them bacteria and viruses are easily destroyed. This is a collective cure to save oneself from common illnesses and epidemics. The land where the Yagyas are held absorbs its qualities and people going there experience its effects which last over a long period of time. In the olden days, places where Yagyas were conducted would later become holy places for pilgrimage. This was because the place where the Yagya took place and its neighbouring atmosphere would become so holy and purified that it would be called a holy place and people coming there would find their minds purified and filled with good thoughts.

The smoke from the Yagya reaches the sky and mingles with the clouds. Then through the rain water when the smoke comes down to the earth, the plants that grow with that water nourish the aquatic animals, inhabitants of the jungle, aerial creatures and human beings.

The sound of the mantras which have become powerful through the fire of the Yagya clears mental anguish and leads to a healthy and balanced mind.

After observing all these special qualities, Swamiji asked for a special place for the fire-ceremony (Yagya-shala) to be constructed, and regular Yagyas are performed here. The effect of Swamiji’s Vibrant Energy and of the daily Yagyas in the Ashram make one feel as if something extra has been added to an already wonderful atmosphere. And this delightful effect is experienced by every sadhak who visits the Ashram.

Three types of Yagyas are performed in the ‘Yagya-shala’ following the ancient scriptural method:

  1. Yagya for purifying one’s chitta or mind (Chitta-Shuddhi Yagya)
  2. Yagya for Welfare of the Universe(Vishwa-Kalyan Yagya)
  3. Yagya for resolving one’s problems (Samasya-nivaran Yagya)

Sadhaks can contact the office for performing the first two types of Yagya and benefit from it.

For the third type of Yagya, the sadhak will have to contact the Acharya of his centre or the Co-ordinator and first obtain their permission. Then he can make his life happy through the benefits of Yagya.
